With three national parks and dozens of nature reserves , Abruzzo boasts an area of protected territory that has no equal in the rest of Europe.
The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise is the oldest in Italy. The Park is crossed by numerous footpaths and tourist routes which allow the visitor to reach all parts of it in complete safety. there are 125.000 acres of land , 18 municipalities , fauna which includes the major animal species native to the Apenninies ( Marsican bears , chamois , wolves , deer and golden eagles ).
The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park is a paradise for hikers and climbers . the highest peak in the region The Corno Grande and The Corno piccolo , are the most popular with trekkers and climbers.
Within the area of the Park , there are many mediaeval villages , including Calascio ,nestling beneath its mighty castle, and Santo Stefano di Sessanio , a perfectly preserved village once owned by the medici family , and now also wordl-famous for its lentis.
The Maiella National Park is ideal for walkers. Vast plains , hills and valleys are crossed by mountain streams with paths flamking them which are ideal for " green" tourism .
The Sirente-Velino National Park which lies wholly within the province of L'Aquila , has over eight peaks measuring more than 2000m and numerous skiing resorts. It is a particularly important area for large birds of prey , and is a population of about 50 griffons.
